We encourage event organisers to protect both the physical and emotional safety of their participants.
Physical safety is a matter of identifying and warning of physical risks e.g. unsafe terrain and poor lighting. For games involving live combat we encourage GMs to ensure that participants fight safely and avoid dangerous behaviour. Further information can be found in our FAQ: Basic Health & Safety Compliance for Larps.
Emotional safety is player-dependent. We encourage event organisers running emotionally intense events to consider using techniques enabling participants to calibrate and, if necessary, temporarily opt-out of play. A quick overview of such techniques can be found in:
- "Safety & calibration Tools in Larps" (external link) by Sarah Lynne Bowman, Maury Brown and Johanna Koljonen
- Safety in Larp Toolkit (external link).
Event organisers should use whichever techniques work for their event.
NZLARPS events are governed by our Code of Conduct. We encourage event organisers to ensure that their event is governed by similar standards of behaviour. NZLARPS is happy for our code to be used by other events.
